Sometimes the rain clouds seem to circle around but never hit the aptly named Sun Bay. Fun Fact: The majority of the original 1963 Lord of the Flies was filmed at Sun Bay as well as other parts of the island. ©trucallenmedia
The horses seen throughout the island are actually descendents from 16th century breeds brought over by the conquistadors. Some may be branded but many are “verbally owned” and left to graze the island. ©trucallenmedia
Sun Bay is by far the largest beach on the island. This photo was taken on the western side where the beach breaks into rock formations, creating little tide pools. Continue west and you’ll cross the sand bridge past Cayo de Tierra and to the town of Esperanza. ©trucallenmedia
El Fortín Conde de Mirasol (or Fuerte de Vieques), is a historic fort built in 1845 overlooking the town of Isabel Segunda. The fort was built to protect the port but was only in operation for 10 years before the Spanish and later, Americans used it as a prison. The fort is definitely on the must visit (non-beach) attractions on the island. The view from the fort is certainly a bonus! Esperanza. If there was ever a Vieques rain shadow, it would seem to be here and Sun Bay. Home to the Malecón (think a stone boardwalk), some great shops, restaurants, and bars, Esperanza has a unique flair that separates itself from Isabel. The beachside ambiance provides a consistent atmosphere, alongside a host of activities and tours that make this Barrio an island favorite for a lot of tourists. ©trucallenmedia
One of the most fascinating things about Vieques is the natural diversity. On the west side of the island you’ll find beaches like Playa Grande and Green Beach which are vastly different than those found in the middle and further east island. This photo was taken towards the northwest corner where the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean meet, creating quite the turbulent junction. ©trucallenmedia
Some places in Vieques, you just don’t talk about. ©trucallenmedia
Naturally, fishing is a large part of the Viequense life. There’s a lot of amazing places around the island to fish, regardless of what method you’re using. And, as the picture shows, it’s pretty hard to find anywhere that’s crowded.
